When buying and selling jewelry and precious metals, choosing the right scale is essential. It is not only about precision, but also about legal compliance.
If trading takes place in publicly accessible areas, these are considered open sales points. Special requirements apply to weighing instruments used in such environments.
Typically, Class II precision scales are used. These can be equipped with an auxiliary indication device, showing an additional digit beyond the verification scale interval “e”, referred to as “d” (e = 10d).
However, only the verification interval “e” is legally relevant.
According to EU directives and metrology laws, scales used in open sales points must not have such auxiliary indication devices. This is to prevent misleading customers regarding the actual accuracy.
Additionally, both buyer and seller must be able to read the weight simultaneously, often achieved via a secondary display.
Although such configurations are still tolerated in some regions, there is a clear trend toward stricter enforcement.
