When working with measuring instruments, you’ll inevitably come across the terms tolerance, accuracy, and resolution. But what do they actually mean – and how do they differ?
Accuracy describes how close a measured value is to the actual or true value. The higher the accuracy, the more reliable the measurement. Accuracy can be influenced by factors such as calibration, environmental conditions, and the underlying measurement technology.
Resolution refers to the smallest increment a device can display or detect. It indicates how fine or detailed a measurement is. A high resolution doesn't necessarily mean high accuracy – if the device is poorly calibrated, the results can still be unreliable.
Tolerance defines the acceptable deviation from a target value. It plays a crucial role in manufacturing and quality assurance, where precision and compliance with specifications are essential.
Although these terms are related, they are not interchangeable. Understanding them correctly helps you better interpret results and choose the right equipment.
